About Us:
Stout Jewelry was started when I became interested in opals while visiting some of the mines in Australia with my dad Randy Stout Sr. It was summer in the USA so it was winter down there. My dad and I were in the middle of a three week vacation and stopped to look at the opal mines. As it turned out we both found the whole place so fascinating that we decided to stay for a few days. We bought our first opal the next day and that was the beginning of everything you see on this site. We spent most of the next day talking with some of the miners and other locals. The thing I liked so much about opal was that there was so much variety, value, and beauty. I also like the atmosphere of the place, it's sort of like the American Wild West, albeit more modern. I was so interested by the bartering and pricing of the opals that I took a walk before I went to sleep that night to think over everything I had seen that day. The logo at the top of the page is a rendering of what I saw on that walk. As the moon came up that night it was a crescent shaped sliver. It was brightly glowing and blood red. As it rose over the outline of the horizon it was perfectly level like a bowl lying on a table. It was quite an inspiring sight that I wish everyone could see with their own eyes. I bought quite a few opals there at the mines and during the rest of that trip but that just got things started. Once I returned to the USA I immediately began learning as much as I could about opals and how to make jewelry with them. It became a bit of an obsession but it was fun too. The combination of my long time interest in sculpting along with a strong interest in opal came together to create Stout Jewelry: rare and beautiful gemstones in expertly set into beautiful custom jewelry. I am not the only one who produces the jewelry seen on this site. My dad cuts opals now as well. He makes designs for some of the jewelry. Other people help to gather opals, materials, and jewelry from Australia and other countries all over the world.
